Don't instantly throw away anything which is left behind! I forgot to empty the fridge and within an hour it had all been thrown away, including my nice tupperware! :( Perhaps warn people if there is going to be building works. For the entire month I stayed, there were painfully loud construction noises right outside my window all day every day.
